One of my favorite things about the EcoChallenge is being able to learn so much through my teammates. I selected certain educational challenges but am learning even more through the knowledge others have gained in researching their own challenges. It's a great time to share tips and tricks for daily actions too. I hope everyone on the HEA team will share something they learned at our Earth Day Celebration this week! :)

I was aware of efforts to provide clean cookstoves through World Oregon (www.worldoregon.org), but the importance of this issue really hit home after my recent travels, where I experienced air pollution and poverty in a way I had not seen before. The Drawdown website directed me to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, which is a UN organization, as a reputable group for my donation. I know there are also local NGOs that focus on this issue.

This month, the NYT has a "how to" guide for reducing your carbon footprint (subscribers only). Highlights include a reliable site for calculating air travel carbon emissions, so you can buy offsets, and tips on how to avoid "fast fashion" and otherwise shop/dress sustainably (would love to see this topic added to future EcoChallenges!)

Not buying plastic is hard! Been trying to remember my reusable produce bags when going to the store and picked up a bamboo toothbrush today after a tip from a friend

In my recent travels, I had a number of sobering observations about the state of the planet, our relationship to nature and waste, and how we can choose to take responsibility. I look forward to learning more about the Drawdown Challenge and what new steps I can take to improve how my actions impact the environment and other people.
