Kristen Patterson 4/25/2018 3:50 PMSpring is a great time to start composting at home if you don't already. Easy to do...and nice to use the compost in home gardens! -
Kristen Patterson 4/24/2018 2:34 AMThere are tons of native plant sales in Northern Virginia this spring - my personal favorite is the one at Long Branch Nature Center. Plant NOVA Natives has lots of resources for selecting and planting native plants, and a list of all of the sales: http://www.plantnovanatives.org/home.html -
Kristen Patterson 4/24/2018 2:30 AMWe are very lucky that Capital Bike Share and other bike share options abound in the DC/VA/MD metro area. They are great for short trips when you don't/can't use your own bike, and for connecting with metro/busses. https://www.capitalbikeshare.com/ -

Kristen Patterson 4/18/2018 4:42 AMNow that spring is here, find your closest farmer's market! I'm excited that a new farmer's market will start in early May that's only a .5 mile walk from my house! -
Kristen Patterson 4/17/2018 5:23 AMLow-flow showerheads are indeed a great way to save water...don't forget to also install low-flow aerators on your sink taps - they are inexpensive (usually less than $5). You can choose 1 GPM (for your kitchen tap) and .5 GPM (for bathroom taps).-
Kristen Patterson 4/18/2018 4:43 AMAmanda - yes, definitely. Or your local hardware store, or Home Depot or Lowe's. -
Amanda Lee 4/17/2018 6:42 AMCan I find these on Amazon?

Kristen Patterson 4/16/2018 5:20 AMWe support local food systems by getting our milk and eggs from a farm in Maryland (South Mountain Creamery); they deliver to our home once a week. Bonus: the glass bottles are re-used every week (no plastic!). -
Kristen Patterson 4/15/2018 5:35 PMEvery year we enjoy seeing how long we can postpone turning on our AC. Even though it was in the high 80s on Saturday, we opened the windows to cool our house before it got warm, then kept the shades closed and used ceiling fans. Let's see how long the season of no heat and no AC can last...our house stays pretty snug thanks to the new ultra-insulating windows we installed a couple of years ago, and the various changes we made after the energy audit we did about 5 years ago.
