I'm a nurse at Ohio Health, and get very frustrated with all the waste that is not recycled.  There are many items daily that are placed in trash because of lack of education about recycling.  There should be more recycle bins placed at the hospital and signage placed to remind others about recycling.

Materials Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

Run off from industry.  Dumping of wastes i.e. used oils etc into waterways.  Use of pesticides/fertilizers that are "earth friendly".  Dumping of plastics into oceans.  Trash anywhere affects the earth and eventually goes into our waterways.

I just read the "4 Foods That Are Eating the World's Forests" article as part of the Land Use challenge, and was so sad to see that coffee is #2.  I can't get through the day without my 2-3 cups!  I purchase coffee in my own bag from a local coffee roaster, so I do get my coffee plastic free, local, and certified organic, but unfortunately their website does not mention shade-grown or Rainforest Alliance Certified.  When making choices for our earth, I know that there are unfortunately always pros and cons.  We do not live in a perfect society.

I did just run a search for "shade" on another local coffee shop's website and the description of one of their coffees indicates it is "bird and eco-friendly.  The plantation employs a medium density shade strategy, using two types of shade trees."  Perhaps I'll try this new coffee option, although they do not offer the ability to purchase in my own bag.  Again, pros and cons...

I took a shoebox of wrapped coins to Chase bank branch yesterday.  I told them to bring the box to me when they were done so I could take it home for recycling.  They said no problem, because they have a recycling bin inside the bank.

Made it through the grocery today with no plastic bags for veggies, etc.

My favorite watering hole knows to not give me a straw!!!

A grocery store moment today:  I needed cranberry sauce.  The 16 oz. size was on sale for a little over $1.  The 8 oz size was about $1  I did not take advantage of the better price because I might not use the leftover sauce of the large can.  More money - less food waste.  My choice today.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of this?

New studies show that keeping your weight in check usually leads to a longer, healthier life.

Smaller amounts of food are better for digestion - i.e. less heartburn, etc.

This has been a great experience to remind me each day that I personally have an impact on our planet.

Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

I have been a yearly supporter of the Nature Conservancy for many years, as I think they are a unique organization in the way their mandate sequesters and protects natural areas of Canada for all of us species who call this home, now and in the future. I am proud to support such an important organization!
